scientology tom cruise alien cathedral new mexico hello message

PANORAMA investigator John Sweeney today reveals the sinister site where Tom Cruise?s Scientology church has carved a message to aliens that can be seen from outer space.

The BBC reporter ? who erupted in fury at a member of the weird sect during a 2007 programme ? tells how he travelled deep into the New Mexico desert to see the Scientologists? ?alien space cathedral?.

The site is home to the buried texts of Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard and was built to withstand a nuclear holocaust.

Sweeney says in his new book Church of Fear ? adapted here by BEN JACKSON ? that the group collects tens of thousands of pounds from each member.

It even palms them off with two cheaply-made electronic gadgets for 100 times the cost of manufacture, according to one former Scientologist.

IF you don?t have a flying saucer, Trementina Base is not an easy place to get to.

But if you?re a visitor from outer space, it?s a doddle because the Church of Scientology has etched two vast interlinked circles on top of a mountain amid the desert scrub of New Mexico.

Each circle has a huge diamond shape inscribed inside as a sign to aliens.

Trementina Base, New Mexico

Mysterious ... mountain in New Mexico hides Scientology cathedral

Just dial up Mesa Huerfanita on Google Earth and you?ll find a nearby mountain scarred by a long concrete strip with a short leg at the northern end pointing east. That?s the loony church?s private airport.

A zig-zag white line from the strip heads north. That?s the church?s private road. It leads to the two linked circles ? invisible from the land below.

The spot is north of Roswell ? a town linked to UFO sightings.

My mobile phone signal dies as soon as I turn off the freeway. This is harsh country like something from a John Wayne western.

The closest settlement, Trementina, is virtually a ghost town. But an old local gives me directions to Trementina Base: Take the dirt track, drive for 30 miles, then you?ll find a gate.

My driver is Marc Headley, a former Scientologist who says he was ?audited? ? given spiritual counselling ? by Tom Cruise, Hollywood superstar and leading church member.

Marc says he was also beaten up by the shadowy church?s leader David Miscavige. The church denies both incidents.

After passing through a rocky gulch we come to a gate marked No Trespassing. Gingerly, we pass through and drive on.

Two more gates are marked No Trespassing. Trementina Gulch is the creepiest place I?ve ever been. We decide to turn back but try again after getting firmer directions.

Base ... cathedral is near UFO town

We are seeking the space alien cathedral that ex-Scientologists say was built deep underground by the church in the 1980s at the cost of millions of dollars. Its vault houses the lectures of church founder L Ron Hubbard on gold discs locked in titanium caskets sealed with argon. The cathedral is H-bomb proof, protected by three 5,000lb stainless steel airlocks.

Experts say the weird signs on top of the mountain will guide Clears, (high-ranking Scientologists) returning from space to find Mr Hubbard?s works after a nuclear Armageddon wipes out humanity.

Ex-Scientologist Chuck Beatty, of Pittsburgh, has said: ?The whole purpose of putting these teachings in the vaults was so that in the event that everything gets wiped out, someone would be willing to locate them and they would still be there.?

The cathedral must have been a huge project needing lots of labour, earth movers and boring gear plus tons of concrete and steel.

The light is fading. I have come 4,500 miles to find this thing, and it is looking like the worst wild goose chase ever.

But we turn one last corner and Marc and I are suddenly confronted by a massive steel gate, secured by a combination lock and guarded by two security cameras. I press an intercom button. A voice says ?Hello? in what sounds like a Scandinavian accent. I announce that I?m John Sweeney and ask nicely for a tour. We are not invited in and the intercom simply spouts white noise. We drive back to civilisation, wondering what kind of religion builds a space alien cathedral underground.

The ?Church of Fear? is not finished with us. We stop the night at a Best Western hotel in the small town of Las Vegas, New Mexico. At 1am Marc receives four mystery phone calls to his room.

Each time the caller hangs up as soon as Marc answers. Both our rooms were registered in my name. They got the wrong room. But still impressive, in a way, because I didn?t book in advance and paid cash. Next day we drive back to Marc?s home in Colorado, talking about the Church in which he spent his life from the age of six.

Marc?s book Blown For Good: Inside the Dark Curtain of Scientology is the bible for Scientologists thinking of leaving the Church. Members often call him for advice.

Marc tells me: ?I don?t criticise Hubbard, I don?t say it?s all bad, I start with money and maths. For instance the E-meter (a device which the church uses to measure the static electric field around a person) costs $40 (?24) to make. The church sells them for $4,000 (?2,400). And everyone needs two in case one breaks down.?

Marc says the church also rakes in a fortune charging members $50,000 (?30,000) a time to be made Clear ? free of unwanted emotions or threats in the unconscious.

It strikes me that a church is not the right word for an organisation that places gold in a vault under the ground. In English we call that a bank.

?30k to lose bad feelings

A STATE of Clear is reached when a person is freed of engrams ? experiences of pain or threats ? which lead to anxieties and illnesses. It can cost up to ?30,000.

Screaming submission

THE Sea Org is the church?s priesthood, run like a paramilitary organisation. An ex-member said: ?You?re controlled by ridicule, derision and being screamed at in your face.?

The Church of Fear ? Inside the Weird World of Scientology, by John Sweeney, is published on January 7 by Silvertail Books, paperback ?12.99 and ebook ?3.99. www.silvertailbooks.com

Surgery Junkies: Wellness and Pathology in Cosmetic CultureSurgery Junkies: Wellness and Pathology in Cosmetic CultureThe ease of accessibility, improvements in safety and technology, media attention, growing acceptance by the public, or an increasingly superficial culture: whatever the reason, cosmetic surgery is more popular today than ever. In 2005, in the United States alone, there were nearly two million aesthetic operations-more than quadruple the number from 1984, along with more than eight million non-surgical procedures. Innovative surgical methods have also brought cosmetic improvements to new areas of the body, such as the ribs, buttocks, and genitalia.

Despite the increasing normalization of cosmetic surgery, however, there are still those who identify individuals who opt for bodily modifications as dupes of beauty culture, as being in conflict with feminist ideals, or as having some form of psychological weakness. In this ground-breaking book, Victoria Pitts-Taylor examines why we consider some cosmetic surgeries to be acceptable or even beneficial and others to be unacceptable and possibly harmful. Similarly, why are some patients considered to be psychologically healthy while others deemed pathological? When is the modification of our appearance empowering and when is it a sign of weakness?

Drawing on years of research, her personal experience with cosmetic surgery, analysis of newspaper articles and television shows, and in-depth interviews with surgeons, psychiatrists, lawyers, judges, and others, Pitts-Taylor brings new perspectives to the promotion of "extreme" makeovers on television, the medicalization of "surgery addiction," the moral and political interrogation that many patients face, and feminist debates on the topic.

While many feel that cosmetic surgery is a deeply personal choice and that its pathology is rooted in the individual psyche, Pitts-Taylor makes a compelling argument that the experience, meanings, and motivations for cosmetic surgery are highly social. A much needed "makeover" of our cultural understanding of cosmetic surgery, this book is both authoritative and thoroughly engaging.

A better pencil sharpener? Inventor dreams of erasing life's annoyances

6 hrs.

Long lines at amusement parks. Traffic stalled at rush hour. Cycling uphill. To most of us, these are just minor problems we face in an otherwise comfortable existence.?To Anwar Farooq, they are personal call-outs, challenges that he must answer with his own ingenuity. These days, the math?teacher and habitual?inventor is wrestling with the age-old problem of the?pencil sharpener.

"When I saw my students struggling with the regular pencil sharpener, I honestly knew that there must be an alternate approach, so I started thinking," Farooq, who teaches?at Maywood Academy,?southeast of Los Angeles, told NBC News.

That's not the first time Farooq "started thinking."

His inventions, spanning 1986 to now, may?seem whimsical at first, but on closer inspection are like early ancestors of devices in use today. There's a bike where your pedaling is boosted by an air compressor, for instance. If you replace the air compressor with an electric motor, you get today's battery-powered bikes.

There's?the Robocam, a?remote-controlled camera platform that's a precursor to telepresence robots and smartphone?videoconferencing apps alike.

For those annoying amusement park or movie theater?lines, Farooq proposes a chain of connected, moving chairs.?You take a load off, enjoy the?built-in entertainment system, and before long, it's your turn to get up and enjoy the ride or show. He calls it Waiting Is Fun.?It may seem far-fetched?... until Disney goes and installs one in Tomorrowland.

The idea Farooq seems most proud of is the?Rapid Commute. Cars traveling from the outskirts of a city?drive right onto a high-speed train, as if they were boarding a ferry boat. The train then brings them to a central location downtown, where they disembark. Next month he will be presenting it to the Transportation Research Board, an off-shoot of the non-profit?National Research Council,?at its annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

And then there's the?Quick N Silent pencil sharpener.?

* * *

Pencil sharpeners are, in fact, one of the few classroom technologies that have?not?experienced a radical redesign in the past century. The most common type of institutional sharpener, the hand-cranked type you can still see?mounted to a wall or the teacher's table in classrooms all over the world,?was introduced in 1904.

Sure, electric versions have been introduced, but?the cylindrical mills rotating in "planetary" fashion within?are still dominant ? despite the inconsistency of their results.

Nevertheless, when Farooq wrestled with how to modernize the?pencil sharpener, he didn't look to some?laser that could hone the tip of a pencil with micron-level precision. Instead, he found inspiration in the distant?past.

"I remembered that people carried pocket knives and they just used those to sharpen pencils quietly and efficiently."

He set to work on the new machine based on the same principles.

* * *

Farooq was always an inventor at heart, but he told us that, growing up in Pakistan, he never had a chance to exercise his creative capabilities. "Even if I had an idea, we were from the lower middle class, so we didn't have any money to do anything," he told us. "My biggest break is that I came to a country like America ??and now I can do those things I desire."

But even after moving to the U.S. in the 1970s, inventing hasn't been exactly easy for Farooq. In fact, following his dreams can at times be something of an expensive habit. "Of course it's a hardship to me and tight financially," he admitted. "My wife says, 'Why don't you take up gambling?'"

At least to him, though, the cost is worth it.?"I live for that, that excitement of finding something, of discovering something." He points out that the famed inventor Nicola Tesla died a poor man, but now they're building a Tesla?museum. Farooq doesn't expect a museum, but he does hope that his inventions will outlast him.

It may be his latest baby, the pencil sharpener,?that lives on. Even in our increasingly?digital world, Farooq feels strongly that pencil and paper, as?a medium for recording thoughts and images, won't disappear any time soon.?"Yes, it is old and unglamorous technology, but it's foolproof and works as advertised."

Its biggest asset is its low cost: "It's cheap enough to be owned by almost anyone in the world," he said.

When he finally figured out how to implement the pocket-knife method of sharpening, Farooq built a mock-up and?patented his design.

His prototype doesn't grind, like the rotary sharpeners in classrooms?worldwide. Nor does it shave around the edge, like the small twisty?single-blade sharpeners that predate the rotary type. Instead, it uses multiple blades to whittle down the edge from all sides at once. True to its name, the blades slice down the end of the pencil, exposing a sharp tip and plenty of lead in a single, silent pass.

Farooq is looking for funding to start manufacturing the device, which he has continually modified over the last few years in his spare time.?A crowd-funding attempt at?Fundageek, a website for inventors, has not produced much income. But he intends to put a more complete version of the device up for consideration on Indiegogo, a larger platform for collecting funding.

In the meantime, Farooq will keep on inventing. His own modest?website lists two things ? Personal Safety 360 and GPS Live Cam ??that he isn't ready to discuss publicly.

"When I came to this country,?I wanted to do something positive, a legacy to leave behind." Whether his inventions find widespread adoption or not, Farooq's insatiable inventor's spirit may continue to inspire the kids in his classroom ??as well as those who encounter him through his growing portfolio.

Iowa City Real Estate: Should You List with a Small or Large Real ...

Does size matter? ?Is it better to list your home with a small real estate company, or a large one?Choices That?s the question that will be top of your mind if you?re thinking of Selling a Home in the Iowa City area. The quick and easy answer to the question is that the size of the real estate company doesn?t matter. It?s the quality of the agent that?s listing your home that matters. Realtors are independent contractors, and that?s regardless of who they work for. Each agent is responsible for taking care of their own listings and how they are marketed. There are good agents at large brokerages and good agents at small brokerages.?That?s why it?s important to choose the agent you work with based on their knowledge of the Iowa City real estate market and their marketing skills, NOT who they work for.

That?s the quick and easy answer, but it won?t answer all your questions if you?re getting ready to list your home in the Iowa City area. Recently I spoke to a seller who thought that listing with a large real estate company would be beneficial, because as he put it there?s the potential of a lot of real estate agents showing the house ?and large real estate companies sell their own listings first.? This is a myth. This might have been true in the eighties before the Internet at a time when buyers didn?t have access to the kind of information they have now. It?s certainly not true these days.

That last paragraph gives you the biggest heads up as to why the size of the real estate company doesn?t matter when you list a home in the Iowa City area.Mobile search real estate The Internet is the game changer that leveled the playing field and made it possible for the small real estate company to compete and ensure you get the kind of marketing exposure you need to sell a home in Iowa City.

When you think about it, that?s what it comes down to. You have a house to sell and you need potential buyers to come by and see it. Before the Internet you might have needed a big real estate company to achieve that. Not anymore you don?t. Now all you need is a tech savvy Realtor to get the job done. After all, 94% of buyers are online. In addition to being listed on the Iowa City MLS you need your house to be prominently displayed anywhere buyers are online. Of course there are a couple of other steps along the way. Preparing your home properly before you put it on the market is one of them and ?pricing your home right for the market is another. That?s why I talked about choosing an agent based on their knowledge of the Iowa City real estate market AND their marketing skills.

The size of the real estate company you work with doesn?t matter ? What does matter is that you choose the right agent to get your home sold!

Got a bike you don't use? - Vancouver Is Awesome

Here?s something really awesome: Firefighters Without Borders are helping fill a couple of shipping containers full of goods to ship off to one of the poorest cities in the Americas. The containers as well as the cost of shipment have already been donated to send help to a remote area of Nicaragua in January, and they need YOUR help in filling them with stuff!

This is Cristina Maria, one of the children who lives in the dump community they?re sending support to

Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Americas and the region of Chinendega is the poorest area of the country. They basically need everything. But goods of all kinds will be put to good use in two different orphanages and three schools, including a community centre that has been built with Canadian support within a garbage dump community of nearly 4,000 people.

The range of items that would be helpful include:

- Bikes, bike parts, repair tools
- Sporting equipment of all kinds for children and youth, particularly baseball, soccer and surfing equipment
- Office equipment including computers, desks, chairs
- Hospital and health supplies and equipment, including toothbrushes, toothpaste etc.
- Power tools of all types and sizes. There is a plan to finish building a trade school and these would be essential
- Kitchen appliances, including ice makers, industrial toasters, ovens, and commercial kitchen supplies. These will be critical for the food programs.
- Marine equipment, including life jackets, motors, parts
- Water purifiers and filters
- Gardening and farming equipment, including generators

Bob Dubbert with a donation from Cheryl Murtland from St Michaels University School

A group, including many kids, are going down to Nicaragua on a volunteer project for March break 2013. It would be great for them to be able to open the containers from Vancouver when they are there to begin their work. If you have any surplus goods along these lines that you can donate it would mean a lot. Please pass this along to anyone you think may be of help.

Charitable receipts can be arranged for the value of the goods through Firefighters Without Borders who are assisting with this work.

The ship leaves Vancouver on January 4th, so any goods earmarked for this impoverished community needs to be identified by January 3rd.

If you have anything to donate please contact Bob Dubbert, President of Firefighters Without Borders, to arrange dropoff. His email is bobdvfd@gmail.com

Executive Producer of The War Z Issues Apology Letter, Details ...

Sergey Titov, the executive producer behind the controversial and somewhat ill-received zombie survival MMO The War Z, has written a formal and lengthy letter to the game?s community of players. The letter is in part an apology to consumers upset by the aggressively ambitious and unequivocally misleading product description on Steam, and part a plan of action for the game going forward.

He also describes how problems in community management and overall moderation of the experience contributed to the origin of issues with the game, and goes into detail their plans for providing a solution. In addition, Mr. Titov announced that he and the team plan to invite 10 select players up to their offices in Los Angeles to meet the team and involve themselves in the game?s creation through sharing their concerns and ideas with the developers at Hammerpoint Interactive.

Below is the letter in its entirety. Above is a video of our? um, ?experience? with the game thus far. Judge how you will, and carry on.

Dear fellow Survivors,

It has now been more than two months since we launched public access to The War Z. We?ve definitely had our ups and downs, and I thought that this Holiday break was the right time for me to try to step back a little and think about our journey since it started. This may be a little long, but I would appreciate if you could stay with me for a few minutes as I try to go over the highlights of the game as well as some of the hurdles and controversies, how we have addressed that and what our plans are.

First of all a very big and sincere ?Thank You!? to all of you. We are really proud of the community we have formed with you guys. Every day we have hundreds of thousands of players on our servers, and this is a life-changing event for the team and me. We are blessed to have you as members of the community and we are well aware that without you the game would be nothing.

Along with that thanks, though, I need to admit that we failed to effectively communicate some of our plans and actions to both our existing players and to our new prospective players. This failure to communicate resulted in some very negative feedback from some members of our community, but while it might be easy to label them as ?haters? or some other dismissive term, in all honesty this is my fault. I became arrogant and blinded by the early success and quick growth of The War Z, our increasing number of players, numbers we were getting from surveys, etc., and I chose not to notice the concerns and questions raised by these members of the game community as well as others. This failure is entirely on my shoulders and if anything I owe thanks to that vocal minority and admit that I should have paid attention sooner. I chose instead to concentrate on the bigger picture ? my dream of turning The War Z from being a game developed by a small indie team into a large online venture, instead of addressing small things first and staying focused on the game issues. At the end my arrogance led us to the moment, when all those small things finally caught up and created a ?perfect storm? that affected all of our community members. For that I?m truly sorry and apologize to all of our community as well as the larger PC gaming community that is not yet playing The War Z.

I do not take this situation lightly, and last week events were especially humbling for me. I?ve experienced a range of emotions, most of which centered on regret for not having addressed some of the issues differently than we did, but we can?t change the past. The only thing we can do is to be sure that we won?t repeat the same mistakes in the future. I have realized that as the leader of this ship, I missed all early warnings that were saying, ?Your community is not as happy as you think they are, you need to alter course.? I was too focused on how great we are and how a small independent team got their first game to over 700,000 users in a two-month period. Though that is something to be very proud of, allowing that to overshadow the existing community and their satisfaction was poor judgment.

I want to give you some insight into what our plans are for the future, but before we get to that, I?d like to clear the air with you on several important topics.

Community management and moderation ? the problem
Even since the early Alpha launch, this game has always cultivated a large and loyal player base that is very active in the game. Again, thank you for this. Unfortunately, we weren?t prepared for this large success and the way we managed the community was not the way it should?ve been. We relied too much on forum moderators, whose primary role was to punish those who break rules, not to engage the community and guide conversations into productive discussions about problems. There wasn?t enough presence of the development team on forums, there wasn?t enough updates on development of UPCOMING features. We failed to communicate our position and messaging on the outside platforms such as Facebook, twitter and various online websites, and when we did this we chose to rely more on arrogance rather than being humble and trying to understand why people were saying negative things. We chose to tune out negative reactions to the game, not paying enough attention to them ? and this, again, is my fault. We chose to rely too much on numbers ? percentage of refund requests, number and dynamic of our daily and monthly active users, etc. Well, in hindsight ? those things probably work well for more casual games, but the hardcore PC gaming community is much different and can be very vocal about what they feel. Even when the percentage of players with negative comments is small, as the community grows, even a small percentage can add up to be a very significant absolute number. And it?s not just a number ? those are real people with real issues they are having with the game. OP Productions (publisher for War Z) and me personally have failed to address those issues effectively.

Community management and moderation ? the solution!
We?re changing our community management procedures and rules right now. We?re going to reevaluate publishing and marketing team performance, and I will make sure that Hammerpoint Interactive developers will have a much stronger voice when it comes to community management and we won?t rely 100% on OP Productions to single handedly handle this. Lots of changes will be happening very fast in the weeks to come. One of the ideas that I proposed was to select 10 players from around the world who can represent the player community and invite them to our offices in Los Angeles, to meet the team, check out what we?re doing, and share with actual developers their concerns, wishes and thoughts on the game. We also will involve community, to a much higher degree, in the process of making our next map for the War Z (called ?California?). We?ll be discussing many of the aspects of the map with you and asking for feedback.

We?re revisiting our forum policies; we?re going to bring on an additional community management team, additional moderators and we?ll train them how to respond to things properly. There will still be restrictions on harassment, trash talk, etc. But we?ll make sure that every opinion is heard. At the same time, I must also be cautious: we cannot address all issues and there cannot be only one voice. Please accept that. With hundreds of thousands of players playing, talking, chatting, voicing their strong opinions, there will always be diverging opinions. And some issues that are minor ones are sometimes brought to light by very vocal channels. I would even say there is sometimes a beginning of controversy because the game is now so popular. So there is sometimes a distortion between the severity of the issue and the attention it gets. But we will clearly implement steps to better listen to the community.

What is Foundation Release?
The most asked question of the last week was ?is this the final release?? My answer has always been that for an online game a ?final? release means that the game is dead ? so there?s really no such thing, you never stop developing, making changes to and adding new features to the game.

This is how we came to call the current version of The War Z ?Foundation Release.? We launched the Foundation Release on December 17, 2012 as our first-stage release that we use as a foundation to build upon. It does include the core features and a fully playable environment. This is our version 1.0, and of course we will continue to improve that version as time goes on.

Did we rush to get it done? That is a tough question, but to answer honestly I think that we all pushed very hard to be first to market and in time for the holidays. Our entire team was working late, long hours to iron out issues and include as many features as possible. This is part of the reality of being a smaller, independent game developer. If we had a larger team and more funding we may have done things differently, but I?m not sure. I don?t think it was a mistake because our numbers have been strong since day one and, even with the recent negativity, our metrics are really solid and we?ve been continuing to grow.

The negative opinions are always the most vocal, but most players are really enjoying the game and we?ve been attracting more and more daily active players every week. A lot of the gaming journalists that have been playing the game have also given us some great feedback. I realize that we will take a few hits from some of the traditional gaming press in terms of review scores, but I?m hoping that even they will consider that this game is a living project that will continue to evolve as time goes on. We are very proud of our Foundation Release, and we do stand behind it like we have stood behind any previous version.

What?s on the Horizon?
As for what will happen next with The War Z? We?re currently evaluating the relationship between Hammerpoint Interactive and OP Productions teams. I firmly believe that Hammerpoint Interactive should be playing a more prominent role in publishing/game operating process. We?re in a process of adding new key members to our team, bringing on guys who have much more experience operating and growing successful online games and I know this is going to make a huge difference in terms of development. We?ll be making some big decisions in terms of leadership for both companies and I will personally change how I handle many things. Above all we will continue to develop and make this game the best that it can be.

I know that to some people my words won?t matter much. I understand that. I hope that will change as we move forward and deliver the features that our players have been waiting for. I can promise you that from now on things will be much more transparent, and we?ll provide better communication and engage our community to discuss upcoming features way before they appear in the game.

I do believe that we aren?t even close to uncovering the true potential for The War Z, and I hope that in the coming year, we?ll be able to regain trust from people who were alienated by our actions and we?ll be able to move forward and grow the game together.

Thank you for reading all this, thank you for supporting the game and thank you for helping us to change and realize what?s important as well as what is not.

I hope you are all having a happy holiday and I wish you the best for the New Year!

Sincerely,

Sergey Titov

Kids: Afghan policewoman who killed was mentally ill

Mohammad Ismail / Reuters

Fatima, 13, holds a picture of her mother, Narges Rezaeimomenabad, at her home in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Wednesday. Her mother is suspected of killing a U.S. contractor at a police headquarters in Kabul.

By Michael Georgy and Mirwais Harooni, Reuters

KABUL ? The Afghan policewoman suspected of killing a U.S. contractor at police headquarters in Kabul suffered from mental illness and was driven to suicidal despair by poverty, her children told Reuters on Wednesday.

The woman was identified by authorities as Narges Rezaeimomenabad, a 40-year-old grandmother and mother of three who moved here from Iran 10 years ago and married an Afghan man.

On Monday morning, she loaded a pistol in a bathroom at the police compound, hid it in her long scarf and shot an American police trainer, apparently becoming the first Afghan woman to carry out such an attack.

?Narges also tried to shoot police officials after killing the American. Luckily for them, her pistol jammed. Her husband is also under investigation.

Her son Sayed, 16, and daughter Fatima, 13, described how they tried to call their parents after news broke of the shooting, then waited in vain for them to come home.

They recalled Narges's severe mood swings, and how at times she beat them and even pulled out a knife. But the children said she was consistent in bemoaning poverty.

"She was usually complaining about poverty. She was complaining to my father about our conditions. She was saying that my father was poor," Sayid said in an interview in their damp, cold two-room cement house.

On the floor beside him were his mother's prescriptions and a thick plastic bag filled with pills she tried to swallow to end the misery about a month ago. On another occasion, she cut her wrist with a razor, Sayed said.

US civilian killed by Afghan policewoman in Kabul

"My father was usually calm and sometimes would say that she was guilty too because it wasn't a forced marriage. They fell in love and got married."

There was no sign in their neighbourhood of the billions of dollars of Western aid that have poured into Afghanistan since the ouster of the Taliban in 2001, or of government investment.

Raw sewage, dirt roads
The lane outside their home stank of raw sewage.

Dirty, stagnant water filled holes in dirt roads nearby, where children in tattered clothes played and butchers stood by cow's hooves in shops choked by dust.

Afghanistan is one of the world's poorest nations, with a third of its 30 million residents living under the poverty line.

The sole distractions from the daily grind appeared to be a deck of playing cards and a compact disc with songs from Iranian pop singers, scattered on the floor of a room where Narges would lock herself in and weep, or sit in silence.

At times, Narges would try to focus on building her children's confidence, telling them to be guided by the Muslim holy book, the Koran, to tackle life's problems.

Taliban says US base targeted in Afghan blast

Sayed and Fatima said she never spoke badly of the U.S. presence in Afghanistan or of President Hamid Karzai's government.

Neighbour Mohammad Ismail Kohistani was dumbfounded to hear on the radio that Afghan officials were combing Narges' phone records to try to determine whether al Qaeda or the Taliban could have brainwashed her into carrying out a mission.

But he was acutely aware of her mental problems and often heard her scream at her husband, whose low-level job in the crime investigation unit of the police brought home little cash.

Kohistani, who operates a small sewing shop with battered machines, never imagined his neighbour could be accused of a high-profile attack that raised new questions about the direction of an unpopular war.

"I became very depressed and sad," said Kohistani, sitting on the floor few feet from a tiny wood-burning stove in Narges'shome, alongside family photographs and a police training manual.

Fatima would often seek refuge in Kohistani's house when her mother's behaviour became unbearable. "She did not hate us, but usually she was angry and would not talk to us," said Fatima, her eyes moist with tears.

Nevertheless, she missed her mother. The children were staying with a cousin.

"I ask the government to free my mother, otherwise our future will be destroyed," said Fatima.

Officials described it as another "insider shooting", in which Afghan forces turn on Westerners they are meant to be working with to stabilize the country. There have been over 52 such attacks so far this year.

The shooting at the police headquarters may have alarmed Afghanistan's Western allies. But some Afghans have grown numb to the violence.

Kohistani's 70-year-old father, Omara Khan, who sports a white beard, sat twirling prayer beads beneath a photograph of Narges in a black veil beside one of her husband.

Asked what he thought of the attack, he laughed.

"This is common in Afghanistan," said Khan, who lived through decades of upheaval, including the 10-year Soviet occupation and a civil war that destroyed half of Kabul and killed some 50,000 civilians.

"People are killed every day."?

Excuse me...is this where life begins?

...shame on you.

Oh, no not you, I was just completing the phrase.

Hello there! A six year roleplayer eh? Well, you must be a vet, and I suppose I can't measure up to your level of experience when it comes to roleplaying on forums seeing as how this is my first and only forum I've roleplayed on. Indeed, they all tend to look 'samey' as you would put it, which is why RPG stands out with its unique system. You can give thanks to site creator, Eric Martindale (username: Remaeus.) We operate on a "don't like it, suggest and improvement" platform, which is how we got here.

I'm sure you're itching to get started, so I won't hold you back.

Oh, one more thing, on behalf of everyone here at RPG, RolePlayGateway, we're glad to have you here.

Nintendo PSA: update the firmware for that gift Wii U

Nintendo Wii U review wrap-up

So you're the very definition of generosity and plan to put a Wii U under the tree for that special someone. Nintendo just provided a helpful tip to keep the kindness going beyond Christmas morning, if it's not too late: update that Wii U's firmware before you wrap the box. Unless the recipients are wired up with Google Fiber, they'll likely face a long wait as that 5GB patch arrives. The process will spoil the unboxing experience, to be sure -- but so does realizing that it's another two hours before anyone can use the eShop and Netflix. Trust us, they'll thank you for it later.

What should you do to a computer before you sell it?

22 hrs.

You know you should securely wipe your hard drive before you sell a computer, but is there anything else you should do before you?put it up on eBay?

Selling (or giving away) an old computer is often a little scary. You likely invested a lot of hours into using your computer, and it's packed full of all your personal stuff. You also want to make sure it's in tip-top running condition before you sell it off so you can get the most money. Here's what you need to do.

Step 1: Back up all your files
The first thing you want to do is make sure you back up everything you need. How you do this really depends on what you have on your computer. If you just need to hold onto a few files,?Dropbox?(or any?cloud storage service) will do the trick. Alternately, you can easily?back up your data to an external hard drive.

If you're going to go a little while between computers, a cloud backup solution like?Crashplan?might be a good bet, and it's?very easy to back up and restore your data. Regardless of what method you choose, make sure you run the backup before you do anything else so all your files are up to date.

Step 2: Deauthorize any software
Next, deauthorize any digital software or files you have. This includes programs like the?Adobe Creative Suite,?Amazon's Kindle Apps, and files you download from online stores?like iTunes.

Likewise, it might be a good time to clean up the services?you enabled two-factor authentication on. While the chances of someone having your password after you securely delete your hard drive in the next step is slim, it's a good idea to make the process of someone logging into your accounts impossible from the start.

One last thing to note before we delete everything: If you're a Mac user running OS X Mountain Lion or OS X Lion, you might?need to make your own USB or DVD boot disc?so you can easily reinstall the OS in step four. You can also?download and install the OS during the reinstallation process, but a physical copy of the OS will put your mind at ease just in case things don't go as planned.

Step 3: Securely Format Your Hard Drive
As we've?mentioned before, the only secure way to clean out your computer's hard drive is to format it so you start from scratch. This process is time-consuming, but it's necessary before you sell your computer to stranger. You don't want any personal information remaining on the hard drive.

We've?walked you through this process before, and it's very simple. On Windows, we like the program?Darik's Boot and Nuke?to format the hard drive, and on Mac the built-in Disk Utility works great.

Step 4: Reinstall the Operating System
Once your hard drive is formatted, you won't have anything on it. This means you need to reinstall an operating system before you sell it. The process?is easy provided you still have your operating system discs. Reboot the system, and boot from the OS disc itself. Windows should automatically boot from the disc, but if not you?can change the settings in your BIOS?to make it work. For Mac, hold down the Option key after you hear the startup chime and select your boot disc (the USB or DVD you made yourself in step two).

Once you're done reinstalling the operating system, it's up to you how far into the setup process you want to go. If you're selling a computer online at a site like eBay, you can stop at the new user creation screen. Just power off your computer when it asks your to create a user account and you're good to go. If you're selling on Craigslist, you might want to create a dummy user account so you can show the person buying the computer that it works.

You don't need to worry about registering the software or anything else, but if you have to prove the computer is in good working shape, just create an account with a simple username and passwords (admin/password works), and tell the buyer to delete the account once he or she decides to buy.

Step 5: Clean it Up
Finally, clean up the computer and make it as nice as possible before you sell it. Not only will it likely sell for more if it looks good, it might also run a little smoother. As we've?talked about before, you should do a few simple things: Wipe down the computer, clean out the keyboard, clean the screen, and pop it open to clean out dust from the inside. This makes the computer a lot more aesthetically appealing, and that makes it easier to sell.

Once your computer is cleaned up and it's looking as good as new,?take some great pictures of it, and then?sell it online at the right time to make the most money.
