England Cricket: Graeme Swann hails Andrew Strauss ? Cricket News Update

England spinner, Graeme Swann, has hailed former Test captain Andrew Strauss as a great personal and a great leader.

Swann, who is also a close friend of the former skipper, wrote in The Sun ?We go back 12 or 13 years to when we were kids and sharing a room at the England Academy in Adelaide."

?I love Straussy to bits. He's been my captain in all but a couple of my Tests and there is nobody I admire or respect more. I couldn't be more proud to call him a mate. Some people are born to lead and he is, without a doubt, a guy you would happily follow into the trenches," added the ace spinner.

Strauss? successful three-and-a-half-year stint came to an end on Wednesday when the 35-year-old retired from professional cricket.

The two-time Ashes winner, Strauss believed it was the right time for him to walk away and leave England in the hands of a new captain.

?After much thought over the last few weeks, I have decided to step down as England Test captain and announce my retirement from all forms of cricket,? said Strauss in a press conference at Lord?s.

The left-handed opening batsman led England in 50 matches as captain and won 24, becoming only the fourth most successful skipper for his country.

According to many former England players, Strauss put England back on the map of international cricket, as it was under his reign that England became the number-one team in Test cricket.

However, his final series against South Africa proved fatal as England not only lost the series by 2-0, but also saw the number-one stature go to the Proteas, who are now the top team in all three formats of the game.

Strauss has been replaced by his opening partner, Alastair Cook, who was already leading England in the limited overs game. Cook?s first assignment as Test captain will be the tour of India this November.

Meanwhile, England are currently busy facing the South Africans in the five-match ODI series, where the Poms are one-up after winning the second game this week.

St. Louis Cardinals (71-60) at Washington Nationals (79-51), 7:05 p.m. (ET)

Washington's Gio Gonzalez tries to become the majors' second 17-game winner on Friday when the Nationals continue a four-game set with the St. Louis Cardinals at Nationals Park.

Gonzalez, who is one win behind Johnny Cueto for the National League lead, missed out on his first chance at win No. 17 on Saturday in Philadelphia, as he absorbed the loss against the Phillies, allowing three runs and five hits in six innings. He also struck out seven and walked a pair, as he fell to 16-7 on the year to go along with a 3.28 ERA.

"They put it together," Gonzalez said of the Phillies. "Those guys can swing the bat, they know how to work the bat. The outcome was there. They were putting me out there, they were giving me a battle, and I was trying to battle back."

New York's R.A. Dickey also has 16 wins and will also be on the hill Friday.

This will be Gonzalez's first-ever start against St. Louis, which will hand the ball to red-hot righty Adam Wainwright.

Wainwright won his fifth straight start and sixth consecutive decision on Sunday in Cincinnati, as he allowed two runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings to improve to 13-10 on the year to go along with a 3.63 ERA.

He has now pitched to a 1.47 ERA in his past five starts and has not allowed more than two earned runs in his previous eight outings.

"I wasn't worn down at all. I felt perfectly normal," said Wainwright, who tossed a five-hit shutout in his previous outing. "I understand I had a couple games in a row where I had nine innings, seven innings, 120 [pitches] or whatever I had, so I get it. I certainly want to take my team further into the game than that, but we'll take a win and go on to Pittsburgh."

Wainwright has faced the Nationals eight times (6 starts) and is 3-2 with a 2.83 ERA.

In Thursday's opener, Bryce Harper finished with a two-run home run and drove in three, as Washington pounded the Cardinals, 8-1. Jayson Werth added two hits, including a solo homer, two RBI and scored three times for the Nationals, who have won two in a row to erase the memory of a five-game skid.

"I don't think any of us were panicking or upset about anything," Werth said.

Edwin Jackson (8-9) tossed eight strong innings, scattering four hits and walking two with an unearned run while fanning 10.

Jaime Garcia (3-6) lasted just 5 1/3 frames, charged with nine hits and six runs in defeat for the Cardinals, losers in three straight.

"I felt like every mistake I made they took advantage of it," Garcia said.

Washington was 4-2 versus the Cardinals last season.

Galaxy Note II priced for Vodafone: 640 euros of LTE phablet goodness

Galaxy Note II priced for Vodafone,

Wondering when you'll be able to get your hands on a Galaxy Note II and just how much it'll cost? Well... we can't help you. But, a placard spotted on the floor at IFA today should give us some hint as to pricing. When it lands in Germany in the coming months, the second-gen phablet will set customers back €639.90, or about $803, through Vodafone. That's quite the hefty price tag, even for an unsubsidized LTE device. Heck, the current model is only $549 commitment free from AT&T right now. Let's just hope the price in dollars is closer, numerically to the German price and not so close in monetary value.

Recreation & Sport: The Joy of Fly Fishing in New Brunswick

bass fishing Cannan river new brunswickFor the first 30 or so years living in New Brunswick I waded many brooks and rivers fly fishing for brook trout and Atlantic salmon but only recently started fishing smallmouth bass in rivers.

When I finally was able to buy a boat I started fishing lakes for smallmouth bass and chain pickerel but never thought about trying rivers for bass.

In 2008 I wrote an article about changing a kids life by taking them fishing and is when Jamie, who has twin girls, contacted me asking if I would give up the location to a bass pond I enjoyed walking around or taking my canoe to.

Well I like nothing more than seeing people take kids fishing so of course I shared it. We became friends and have been fishing together every since.

Just last year Jamie invited me to wade the Cannan river for some smallmouth. It was the first time I've waded a river for bass and I had great time. This year we waded the river twice.

casey-bass-fishing-1Then in May 2009 I met Casey on a fishing forum, of all places, and he invited me to go fishing with him on Lake Petit, which was really just the Petitcodiac river, for smallmouth bass.

Back in the mid 80s I lived with the Petitcodiac river in our backyard and never knew there were bass in there. I would drive for an hour for bass fishing. DUH!!

Since then I have fished many time with both Jamie and Casey on a few rivers in New Brunswick such as the Oromocto river, the Saint John river, the Cannan river and a few others I can't remember the names of.

Jamie catches the year's biggest bass at RedbankThat's Jamie on the right with a big smallmouth he caught while we were fishing from his canoe. This was in a little inlet off the Salmon river near Chipman.

I had been fishing here for many years and never once caught a bass, lots of chain pickerel and perch though.

We have done a lot of fishing since then but last year he called me to see if I would like to do some wading for smallmouth bass on the Cannan river.

There are a lot of rivers in New Brunswick that hold bass but my understanding is that most people fish the lakes and ponds for them but not so many fish the rivers for bass.

Some pictures of the smallmouth bass I've caught in New Brunswick rivers:

Fishing the Cannan River

This one is the first day Jamie took me bass fishing in the Cannan river. I wore the life vest because I'm not all that steady of my feet. Only fell in once.

bass from shepody river

Casey and I launched his boat on the Shepody river near Riverside-Albert.

saint john river bass

This smallmouth bass was caught on the Saint John river near Jemseg. This was my first time fishing the Saint John and couldn't wait to get back there again.

salmon river smallmouth bass

This was my first smallmouth bass caught on the Salmon river near Chipman and was a huge surprise as I usually only get chain pickerel in this area. Great fun.

smallmouth bass on the oromocto river

Jamie took me fishing the Oromocto river in his canoe. I made a cast to a rock right next to a steel bridge and this guy slapped hard. Thought he was going to get off a couple of times before I got him back to the canoe.

Japan ranked among earth's healthiest oceans

Japan has been ranked among the countries with the world's healthiest oceans, it was revealed yesterday (August 16th).

The study, published in the journal Nature, took into account ten core factors that included biodiversity, food provision, clean water, tourism and coastal protection.

Some 171 countries and regions were given a score out of 100, with Japan nine points above the average of 60.

Although Japan fared better than most in the world, scientists expressed dismay that so much of the globe's seas are underperforming in terms of health.

The Ocean Health Index gave 32 countries a score below 50, with under-performing regions more likely to be in developing countries.

"Is the score far from perfect with ample room for improvement, or more than half way to perfect with plenty of reason to applaud success? I think it's both," said Dr Ben Halpern, lead author of the study.

While Japan performed well, the UK and the US were barely above average with scores of 62 and 63, respectively.

WOMEN'S GOLF:Big expectations for Hague, Ball State this season

Ball State women?s golfer Jenna Hague had more riding on her shoulders than a typical freshman athlete last year.

Instead of redshirting or waiting for an opportunity on the bench, she went straight to the top, shooting the lowest score in Ball State?s first tournament of the 2011-12 season, and the first event of Hague?s career.

That tournament defined Hague?s season, as the team wound up counting on a newcomer to produce the best scores every tournament. She came through with those expectations, posting the team?s highest 18-hole average at 77.97 for the golfers that played in at least 10 events.

Now a sophomore, Hague is in a more comfortable role to lead the team, especially with some enthusiastic backing from her coach.

"There is no limit to what Jenna can accomplish in her golf career,? coach Katherine Mowat said. ?She has everything it takes to be successful. She is a student of the game, always learning and using each experience to improve. She is not afraid of success, and she has the ability to go low. She remains humble and she is the ultimate team player.?

Along with Hague, Ball State is returning most of its top players.

Senior Zoe Camus, a transfer from France, shot a 77.57 average in six events last season. The upcoming season is her last year of eligibility, and Mowat said Camus is taking her final opportunity seriously.

?I know Zoe will approach this year with a 'nothing-to-lose' [and] 'one-last-chance' mentality and she is talented and mature enough to make the most of it while being a significant contributor to our team,? Mowat said.

Boy dies, brother missing in river in Yosemite

Park officials say the two were part of a family visiting from Southern California that had been hiking near the Vernal Fall Footbridge. (AP Photo/GosiaWozniacka, File)

(AP) ? Authorities were searching a stretch of the Merced River for a 6-year-old boy after his older brother died when a current swept them away during a family outing in Yosemite National Park.

The boy is presumed dead. Other hikers pulled the body of his 10-year-old brother about 150 yards downstream from where family members had waded into the river to cool off Wednesday.

Their mother was hospitalized with a back injury after being pulled from the river, park spokeswoman Kari Cobb said.

"She went into the river but made it out," Cobb said.

The names of the boys were not immediately released.

The family from Southern California was hiking near the Vernal Fall Footbridge, a vantage point on the Mist Trail where Vernal Fall first comes into view.

That portion of the hike can be perilous. The river falls 317 feet straight down to a narrow gorge filled with boulders the size of cars, then descends another 400 feet by the time it reaches the bridge.

Even when the river is moving slowly, the drop in elevation and narrow channel cause the water to move swiftly. The Merced River runs through the heart of Yosemite Valley.

The boys were part of a group of about 15 extended family members who made the short hike to the bridge, park spokesman Scott Gediman said. Signs at the trailhead warn that the river can be dangerous, but people often are drawn to the water's edge.

"We've got a low water year this year, and around the banks it's only 8 to 10 inches deep, but once you get out further, we have a swift current and it gets deeper," Gediman said. "They both got swept away by the current."

The location also was the site of tragedy last summer when three Central California friends cooling off in a pool above the fall were swept to their deaths. Two of their bodies were discovered months later lodged under boulders near the site where the 10-year-old boy was found.

A 57-year-old man drowned two weeks ago in the Merced River when he was pinned under a rock, and another person died in June on the south fork of the river near the Wawona area in the park.

The trail remained open during the search for the boy but portions might be closed depending upon developments.

The all-new Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 - first look

Galaxy Note 10.1

Reworked since its announcement six months ago?, we take the new Galaxy Note 10.1 for a spin.

Hey, look at that. Some six months after we first got our hands on the Samsungn Galaxy Note 10.1 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, it's finally time for this touchable tablet to hit the streets. We've live at Samsung's launch event this morning in New York City, but we've already gotten a second -- and much more fresh -- look at the tablet.

When I reviewed Acer’s latest Iconia Tab last month, one of the things that left a bad taste in my mouth was the A700’s lack of innovation-- with a seemingly endless onslaught of tablets flooding the market, nothing seems to differentiate one from the other. Sure, Tegra 2 and Tegra 3 and RAM and ROM look impressive on paper, but in hand, the latest beefed-up tablet has almost no difference from the older models. With the Galaxy Note 10.1, however, the tides have turned, and dare I say Samsung has finally released a tablet that stands out among its competitors.

Read on for our latest look at the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1.

Thai senator says he shot ex-wife by accident

A Thai senator who shot his ex-wife at the dinner table with an Uzi 9mm pistol said Tuesday that her death was a tragic accident.

Boonsong Kowawisarat, 56, said the gun went off while he was trying to remove a stuck bullet, fatally injuring 46-year-old Chanakarn Detkard, who was also his secretary.

"It was my gun. I showed her the gun that I had bought for her. She lived with her mother and our two daughters -- there are only women in her place -- so I wanted her to have it as I'm worried about them," he told AFP by telephone.

"My hand is not in good condition. I am ill. I had a stroke," he said. "It was an accident."

The death occurred on Sunday evening at a private dining area in northern Phrae province in the presence of about 10 family members.

Confusion surrounded the incident as police initially reported the gun was a 9mm Uzi sub-machine gun. It later transpired it was a pistol of the same brand. The victim was also first reported to be the senator's cousin.

Police said Boonsong, who is the Thai senate representative for northern Mae Hong Son province, is likely to be charged with causing death by negligence, although he currently has parliamentary immunity.

Mophie Juice Pack Pro (for iPhone 4 and 4S)

By Eugene Kim

The Mophie Juice Pack Pro ($129.95 direct) ?isn't for everyone. It's big, bulky, and a bit gaudy when compared with Mophie's typically slick products. But if want your iPhone 4 or 4S to keep up with your latest outdoor adventures, the Juice Pack Pro is an interesting option. It features a high capacity battery that'll keep your phone juiced when power outlets are few and far between, and its rugged design will protect your delicate phone from the rigors of taking the road less traveled.?

This beast of a case measures 5.3 by 2.8 by 1.0 inches (HWD) and weighs 5.3 ounces (the iPhone 4S itself weighs 4.8 ounces). This case is for those who are willing to sacrifice portability for protection and peace of mind. It exceeds military specifications (MIL-STD 810G) for impact protection and dust/sand penetration, which means it should stand up to some serious abuse. Keep in mind, though, this case is only water resistant, not waterproof like the comparatively svelte LifeProof iPhone case?. It'll withstand some rain and splashes, but you can't fully submerge this one.

Inline

The Juice Pack Pro has an inner plastic shell, which separates into front and back pieces, with a rubber outer shell that wraps around the entire case. Installation is straightforward and simple, though it takes a bit of agility to get the rubber boot on and off. All of the iPhone's ports and buttons are covered with water resistant plugs, which make them a bit cumbersome to access. There's a cutout for the rear camera, but the recess is too deep and reflective, causing washed out pictures when using the LED flash. The built-in plastic screen protector has a water tight port for the earpiece, microphone, and speakers, while a rubber button provides access to the iPhone's Home button.

Throughout the testing period, I couldn't get rid of the unsightly air bubbles between the plastic screen protector and the iPhone's screen. Touch response is uninhibited, but the air bubbles are distracting, even with screen brightness set to max. Music sounds a bit muffled through the speaker slots, but call quality is good, if a little on the low end volume wise. I roughed the case up a bit by throwing it around our labs, and every time the iPhone 4S inside remained unscathed.?The built-in 2500mAh battery was able to add 11 hours, 21 minutes of 3G talk time to our Verizon iPhone 4S. That bests Mophie's non-rugged Juice Pack Plus , which added 10 hours, 43 minutes.

There are very few uses for which I'd recommend the Mophie Juice Pack Pro. It will add substantial battery life and protect your phone from a lot of abuse, but it's simply too big and heavy for all but the most extreme adventurers out there. The LifeProof case offers less robust impact protection and no added battery life, but it's substantially slimmer, lighter, and completely waterproof. If you are one of those intrepid individuals who needs the protection and power, then the Juice Pack Pro is definitely worth a look.?

Teddy bear team rejects Belarus KGB summons

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? A Swedish advertising agency that air-dropped hundreds of teddy bears carrying pro-human rights messages into Belarus has rejected a summons for questioning by the former Soviet republic's KGB security agency.

Instead, Studio Total offered Tuesday to discuss the matter directly with the country's authoritarian president, Alexander Lukashenko, and invited him to Sweden.

The KGB on Friday summoned three members of Studio Total ? Hannah Frey and co-founders Tomas Mazetti and Per Cromwell ? to explain their "illegal crossing" into Belarus. The summons threatened them with fines, six-month prison terms or "corrective labor" unless they appeared within 10 days.

The group's July 4 teddy bear stunt infuriated Lukashenko, who fired two generals over it. It also added stress to already deteriorating diplomatic relations between Stockholm and Minsk. Belarus this month effectively expelled the Swedish ambassador and ordered Sweden to close its embassy in Minsk over what Stockholm said was its push for human rights.

"Threatening someone with 'corrective' work if they don't accept your invitations is considered bad manners," the Swedish team wrote in a sarcastic open letter to Lukashenko.

The team said they had received threats by email and telephone since the teddy bear stunt and that "all trails" point to the KGB.

"To sum it up, all these small issues have made us lose our appetite to come and visit you," they wrote, suggesting instead that Lukashenko come to Sweden.

The KGB said Friday it wants the Swedes to participate in its "investigative actions" so it can clarify the role each person played and help it decide how to deal with two Belarusian men accused of aiding the Swedes.

Studio Total at the time warned that Lukashenko may be using the two Belarusians as pawns to force the Swedes to go to Minsk.

Lukashenko has ruled Belarus, a nation of 10 million, since 1994, repressing opposition groups and independent news media while preserving a quasi-Soviet economy with about 80 percent of industry in state hands. He has earned the nickname in the West of "Europe's last dictator."

Although the teddy bear drop was not officially cited as a reason for the closing of Sweden's embassy in Minsk or the barring of Sweden's envoy there, Lukashenko was last week cited as accusing Swedish diplomats of involvement in the stunt.

Google Buys Newspaper Ad to Show Why Newspaper Ads Don't Work

Here?s a nice bit of multi-faceted irony for you: On Thursday, Canada?s Globe and Mail newspaper ran a print ad for Google?s (directly competitive) search advertising business.

?You know who needs a haircut? People searching for a haircut,? the ad reads. ?Maybe that?s why ads on Google work.?

The ad was tweeted by media reporter Steve Ladurantaye with the caption, ?An ad for Google ads in today?s Globe demonstrates the value of print ads, yes??

Google?s ad ran in both the Globe?s print and digital editions, as well as in the National Post, the Globe?s main competitor, Ladurantaye tells us.

But hey, at least Google is supporting newspapers, right?

Tap Water - Health, Fitness, and Sports

Do you drink tap water? If yes or no, why? What do you think about tap water and if you drink other kinds of water, why do you drink that water?

I drink tap water when I don't have a working filter. I dislike it, because it tastes dirty, and it's too hard. After about 6 hours of sitting out in a glass it tastes even worse. With filtered water the taste is cleaner, crisper, lighter, and doesn't go bad as quick. I feel like I am drinking healthier water when drinking it filtered.

DRC judoka, coaches, missing - ministry

A judoka and three coaches from the Democratic Republic of Congo's Olympic delegation have gone missing after leaving the Athletes' Village at the London Games, the country's sports ministry said on Monday.

Cedric Mandembo, who competed in the +100kg category, boxing coach Blaise Bekwa, athletics coach Guy Nkita and judo coach Ibula Masengo have not been seen since the Games came to a close on Sunday evening, the source said, requesting anonymity.

The country's 12-strong delegation to the Games is due back in Kinshasa on Thursday.

An informed source in the capital said national boxing coach Bekwa disappeared from the Athletes' Village on Friday while Nkita, national athletics technical director, had left the area just after Ilunga Mande pulled out of the men's marathon. Masengo was reported to have disappeared Saturday night while Mandembo was said to have disappeared just after the closing ceremony on Sunday evening.

Asked about the disappearances, the minister of sport and youth, Baudoin Banza Mukalay, said: "I don't know... I left London this morning. Yesterday (Sunday) I was with officials before the closing ceremony.

"They gave me a report that everything was going well."

According to Mukalay, the Congolese delegation is due back in Kinshasa before Wednesday.

The country's four athletes did not shine at the Games: Mandembo lost his first fight after only 49 seconds; Ilunga Sankuru finished 14th out of 15 in the women's 1500m; while boxer Mwamba Meji lost on a referee's decision.

Marathon runner Ilunga Mande pulled out two kilometres from the finish.

Real Estate Buying: How To Make The Process A Good One ...

There are so many challenging aspects about buying a home: searching, financing, understanding the regulations, and more! It can really drive you crazy! Knowing something about all of these aspects is critical.

If you are purchasing a home in foreclosure, assume that it probably will need many repairs. Many of the foreclosed homes that are on the market have been vacant for quite some time. Regular maintenance has more than likely not been done on the home, which means significant repairs should be expected. Many foreclosed homes that are on the market will need to have new HVAC systems put in, and may also have pests.

Be sure to save up the down payment your mortgage loan servicing company requires. If you can?t make a traditional down payment, then you may have to get private mortgage insurance. This can add a lot of money to your monthly costs to show your bank the mortgage is able to get paid.

If you have sufficient funds, avoid purchasing a house that is in front of or behind a busy road. You might be saving money, but you will soon find out why the price was so low. Even if you can live with the noise, you will have a hard time selling this house later.

Get organized before you jump into the house-buying game. Commit a notebook to information that is gathered through a variety of sources. This is a great method as it helps keep all of you information that you have gathered in one place.

Research a rental property thoroughly before buying it. Whenever you are thinking about buying rental property, don?t make any decisions until you have thoroughly reviewed all necessary records going back at least two years. You must make sure the seller is providing thorough and correct information about the possible income generation of the property. The lender will also want proof of the property?s income before issuing a loan.

However, if your own income is not secure, don?t enter a mortgage. Once your name is signed on a mortgage, you?re claiming you are solely responsible for the monthly payments, no matter the situations in your life. With unstable employment, you must have enough savings to make several payments without income, just in case.

Be sure to check into your credit report and score before you make any attempts at looking to purchase a house. Once you?ve gotten a copy of the report, examine each entry to find out if there are any mistakes. If your credit is stellar, you will have an easier time securing that much needed mortgage.

You must research the neighborhood of a home before you buy. If the neighborhood isn?t any good, then you will be miserable, even if the property itself is fine. You must know about the neighborhood, as this is key to your enjoyment of your home.

Use the information here as your initial vantage point in procuring the knowledge and resources you want in your search for a new home. Get pre-approved by your mortgage lender before beginning your home search. We wish you all the luck in your hunt for a new home!

(AP) ? Even before Wisconsin sent Paul Ryan to Congress, he was meticulously carving a path that seemed to point only upward.

As a young Capitol Hill staffer, he impressed Republican lawmakers with his hustle and intellectual curiosity. He blended quickly with an elite crop of conservative thinkers. By his 30s, he was a congressman on his way to becoming a GOP name brand with his push-the-edge budget proposals.

Ryan's climb reached new heights Saturday when Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney announced him as his running mate.

"Mitt's Choice for VP is Paul Ryan," said a phone app Romney's team created to spread the word to supporters.

As the chairman of the House Budget Committee, Ryan gives Romney a link to Capitol Hill leadership and underscores Romney's effort to make the election a referendum on the nation's economic course. Romney also could see his standing improve in Wisconsin, a state President Barack Obama won handily four years ago but that could be much tighter this November.

Even so, Ryan has been a double-edged sword for Romney. The congressman's endorsement of Romney came at a critical stage of the GOP primaries, giving him a boost in the Wisconsin race that effectively buried Romney's final threat. But it also meant Romney was embracing the Ryan-sponsored budget proposal that Democrats fiercely target as painful to the poor and elderly.

Still, the square-jawed congressman is viewed as a bridge between the buttoned-up GOP establishment and the riled-up tea party movement.

At 42, Ryan has spent almost half of his life in the Washington fold, the last 14 representing a southern Wisconsin district that runs from the shores of Lake Michigan through farm country south of Madison.

Ryan grew up in Janesville and still lives just down the block from where he spent his boyhood. During summers in college, Ryan was a salesman for Oscar Mayer and once drove the company's famed Wienermobile.

Ryan's father, a lawyer, died of a heart attack when Ryan was a teenager. It's why Ryan is a fitness buff, leading fellow lawmakers through grueling, early-morning workouts and pushing himself through mountain climbs.

That same intensity propelled him on the political front, too.

He was first exposed to Congress as a summer intern to former Sen. Robert Kasten, R-Wis. With an economics degree in hand, Ryan worked his way through committee staff assignments, a prominent think tank and top legislative advisory roles until opportunity arose with an open seat from his home turf. He leveraged Washington connections, local ties forged through the family construction business and the backing of anti-abortion groups en route to his surprisingly comfortable victory.

As a 28-year-old, Ryan entered Congress brimming with idealistic views about forcing government to become leaner and less intrusive, principles he thought even fellow Republicans were abandoning too readily.

"One of the first lessons I learned was, even if you come to Congress believing in limited government and fiscal prudence once you get here you are bombarded with pressure to violate your conscience and your commitment to help secure the people's natural right to equal opportunity," Ryan wrote in a 2010 book.

Critics question Ryan's own consistency. They note that he backed a costly prescription drug benefit during Republican George W. Bush's presidency that added strain to the Medicare budget, which Ryan touted at the time as "one of the most critical pieces of legislation" enacted since he joined Congress. He said in a June interview with The Associated Press that he took a "defensive" vote to ward off a more expensive Senate version. More recently, Ryan served on a bipartisan presidential debt commission but balked at its report because a tax increase was on the menu of options.

He is a disciple of and past aide to the late Rep. Jack Kemp, once a GOP vice presidential nominee himself who effusively promoted tax cuts as a central tenet for economic growth.

From the title page of his idyllic "Path to Prosperity" budget plan down to the most scrutinized fine print, Ryan is adept at framing proposals in the most pleasant terms.

Ryan's opponents charge that his call to open Medicare to more private competition is too risky even if implementation would be a ways off; he counters that the latest version was fashioned in consultation with prominent Democrats in hopes of heading off an all-out program collapse that would devastate the financial security of future retirees. Foes say his plans to scale back food stamps and housing assistance are mean-spirited; Ryan describes the moves, which would allow states to further customize their welfare programs while imposing tougher time limits and work requirements, as empowerment for the downtrodden who he argues are being lulled into lives of complacency and dependency.

It took time for Ryan's own party to get fully behind his ideas. A few years ago, when Ryan first proposed dramatic changes to entitlement programs like Medicare some in the GOP were skittish because Democrats pounced on the plans as undermining the health program accessed by millions of retirees.

Kasten said Ryan's refusal to back down paid off politically.

"If all the sudden you become the dartboard for everyone on the left and you are willing to stand there and take the heat and the darts, you develop a tremendous amount of respect even from those who are throwing the darts," Kasten said. "In the beginning it's a grudging respect. It grows into a true respect."

Ryan has let opportunities to advance come and go, most recently when he opted not to seek an open U.S. Senate seat. His young family factored into his considerations; he and wife, tax attorney Janna, have a daughter and two sons, ages 10, 8 and 7.
