The AP is now reporting that Syria has dropped off the Internet as the government imposed a blackout over the entire nation?s critical communications from Internet to cellphones services (in select areas.) Thursday, rebels and government troops are engaged in warfare in the streets that have even strayed near the capital?s airport?suspending air traffic for the time being as well.
The outage in Syria has been confirmed by multiple sources, including Akamai Technologies Inc., a well known Internet data distributor who constantly monitor networks in order to get the best bandwith for their customers delivery. Renesys, another US-based network security firm, also confirmed stating that Syria effectively vanished Thursday at 12:26 p.m. local time.
?In the global routing table, all 84 of Syria?s IP address blocks have become unreachable, effectively removing the country from the Internet,? Renesys said.
Also according to Renesys, there are a few live Syrian networks, all of which belong to Tata Communications:
?These are potentially offshore, rather than domestic, and perhaps not subject to whatever killswitch was thrown today within Syria. These five offshore survivors include the webservers that were implicated in the delivery of malware targeting Syrian activists in May of this year,? writes the company.
State Controlled Killswitches Part of Warfare
We?ve seen the use of a killswitch before to cut off internal communication to local populations used before by countries seeking to control their territory.
In January 2011, Egypt used a killswitch to cut off communications over their Internet during the popular uprisings. The act led to a massive loss of data from the state and a return to oldschool journalism and communication (those without the Internet) although information still flowed out of and into the state.
Libya suffered under a six-month blackout imposed by their government in 2011 as well, restored in August of that year. The?Libyan?government had cut off the Internet in their own country due to a very similar reason to Egypt?s blackout: to control and pacify rebels fighting in their streets.
The World Watches the Darkened Syria
Even with cell service and Internet cut, there are still telephone cables running in and out of Syria and activists have gone to those in order to maintain communication with the outside world. Also, there?s no news that the Syrian government is jamming radio or satellite communications. It will be even harder than before to be part of the global community for local residents; but many of them probably have a lot more to worry about with fighting outside their doors.
Cutting off an entire country from the Internet and the rest of the world at large feels like a heavy door shutting. It throws news and communication to that country back to pre-1990 levels of newsmaking and renders the populations cut off from the rest of the globe. Fortunately, the Internet is a brand new medium for communication and news delivery and wartime journalism hasn?t changed that much (after all news got out during World War II.)
We?ll be watching to see how groups such as Anonymous and others respond to this. In the past, they have reacted by hitting government websites or financial institutions owned by the states in question; however, without the Internet flowing to them, those institutions lack their fundamental vulnerability to hackers (and they?re already without communication anyway.)
We also expect that groups such as Anonymous might become distributors of information into and out of Syria, including information on how activists and people can get news out as they have done in the past.

Reduced production of myelin, a type of protective nerve fiber that is lost in diseases like multiple sclerosis, may also play a role in the development of mental illness, according to researchers at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. The study is published in the journal Nature Neuroscience.
Myelin is an insulating material that wraps around the axon, the threadlike part of a nerve cell through which the cell sends impulses to other nerve cells. New myelin is produced by nerve cells called oligodendrocytes both during development and in adulthood to repair damage in the brain of people with diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS).
A new study led by Patrizia Casaccia, MD, PhD, Professor of Neuroscience, Genetics and Genomics; and Neurology at Mount Sinai, determined that depriving mice of social contact reduced myelin production, demonstrating that the formation of new oligodendrocytes is affected by environmental changes. This research provides further support to earlier evidence of abnormal myelin in a wide range of psychiatric disorders, including autism, anxiety, schizophrenia and depression.
"We knew that a lack of social interaction early in life impacted myelination in young animals but were unsure if these changes would persist in adulthood," said Dr. Casaccia, who is also Chief of the Center of Excellence for Myelin Repair at the Friedman Brain Institute at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. "Social isolation of adult mice causes behavioral and structural changes in neurons, but this is the first study to show that it causes myelin dysfunction as well."
Dr. Casaccia's team isolated adult mice to determine whether new myelin formation was compromised. After eight weeks, they found that the isolated mice showed signs of social withdrawal. Subsequent brain tissue analyses indicated that the socially isolated mice had lower-than-normal levels of myelin-forming oligodendrocytes in the prefrontal cortex, but not in other areas of the brain. The prefrontal cortex controls complex emotional and cognitive behavior.
The researchers also found changes in chromatin, the packing material for DNA. As a result, the DNA from the new oligodendrocytes was unavailable for gene expression.
After observing the reduction in myelin production in socially-isolated mice, Dr. Casaccia's team then re-introduced these mice into a social group. After four weeks, the social withdrawal symptoms and the gene expression changes were reversed.
"Our study demonstrates that oligodendrocytes generate new myelin as a way to respond to environmental stimuli, and that myelin production is significantly reduced in social isolation," said Dr. Casaccia. "Abnormalities occur in people with psychiatric conditions characterized by social withdrawal. Other disorders characterized by myelin loss, such as MS, often are associated with depression. Our research emphasizes the importance of maintaining a socially stimulating environment in these instances."
At Mount Sinai, Dr. Casaccia's laboratory is studying oligodendrocyte formation to identify therapeutic targets for myelin repair. They are screening newly-developed pharmacological compounds in brain cells from rodents and humans for their ability to form new myelin.
Dr. Casaccia is the recipient of the Neuroscience Javits Award by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a division of the National Institutes of Health, who also funded this research (R37-NS42925-10) along with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

After years forswearing year-end celebrations because of belt tightening, more companies are feeling festive enough to host holiday gatherings, according to several recent surveys.
Close to 83 percent of 100 human resources managers said their companies will host an event this year, including 10 percent who didn?t have a party last year because of the economy, according to preliminary results from the annual Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., holiday party survey.
Don?t expect an extravaganza. Few companies are going back to the champagne and caviar affairs common before the recession.
Instead, they?re opting for more modest or original activities -- a potluck lunch, after-hours party at the office, or volunteering at a food bank followed by dinner at a local restaurant. ?There appears to be a move from the more traditional night out, with dinner and a dance band,? says Robert Hosking, executive director at Robert Half International?s OfficeTeam division, which conducts an annual office party survey. ?I think companies are becoming more creative with this, and allowing employees to come back with recommendations.?
Most people like holiday parties. At companies that hold parties, 79 percent of managers and 75 percent of employees say they enjoy them, according to OfficeTeam?s 2012 office holiday party survey.
But even if office parties turn you into Mr. Grinch, you can?t afford to skip them, says business etiquette expert Barbara Pachter. ?Think of it as a business opportunity,? she says, ?because the people you meet may be interviewing you in three or six months? for a new position or promotion.
If your company is throwing some kind of shindig this season, here?s the experts? advice for making the most of it:
Don?t talk shop. Conversations about work are OK, in moderation. Parties are a chance to get to know co-workers on a different level. ??You can talk about what people are doing for the holidays, what vacations they have coming up,? movies, plays, or sports you or your kids play, Pachter says. ?Then you have a common bond.? Three things Pachter recommends steering clear of: sex, politics and religion. And as hard as it can be, don?t gossip about co-workers. If you get stuck, ?You can listen, but don?t contribute.?
Mingle. Move beyond your usual circle of co-workers and introduce yourself to people you might not run into otherwise. ?It?s a great place to network with more senior people who could influence your career,? Hosking says.?
Leave the thigh-high dress and ripped jeans at home. Think business casual. If you think something?s too suggestive or casual, it probably is, Pachter says.
Look like you?re having fun, even if you?re not. Body language can reveal a lot about a person?s attitude. You might be there under duress, but you don?t need to show it. Frowning, crossing your arms or sitting at the table texting will?broadcast how much fun you?re not having, Pachter says. To boost your confidence talking to higher ups, practice a few ?power poses? before you go, suggests career coach Susan Joyce, in this blog post.
Don?t get plowed. If you?re not a party person, it?s easy to drink too much to make yourself feel more comfortable. Don?t.? A participant in one of the etiquette seminars Pachter teaches shared the story of a young man who got drunk at his company Christmas party, told off his boss and got fired on the spot. ?The next day he couldn?t understand why his badge didn?t work,? she says. If you do over-imbibe, accept any morning-after ribbing. ?It usually blows over,? Pachter says, ?but if you get defensive, they?ve found your vulnerability and it?ll tend to stick around.?
Take pictures, but ask before posting anything online. Despite years of warnings about the damage people can do to themselves and their friends by posting pictures of potentially compromising situations on Facebook or elsewhere, it still happens all the time, Pachter says. Always ask.
Brief your spouse. If you?re bringing a significant other, give them the 411 in advance on co-workers you work with that they should know.
Don?t cut out early. If it?s a dinner, stay through dessert. If there?s dancing, stick around for at least one song.? ?If everyone in your department is staying, you should stay awhile too,? Pachter says.
Exploring the world with the hottest cameras and smartphones, I've grown accustomed to drawing discreet glances from curious gadget enthusiasts. In Tokyo, it was Canon's EOS M camera that netted polite peeks. In Hong Kong, it was the Galaxy Note II. From the moment I exposed the striking Galaxy Camera in Bangkok, however, those subtle scans turned into full-on stares, with several courageous passersby even inquiring about the latest Android-based Samsung device dangling from a strap around my wrist.
"Is that a phone or a camera?" Well, it's certainly not the best camera, nor is it a passable "phone," but for this early adopter, at least, it was poised to replace both. When Samsung first revealed its Jelly Bean-powered superzoom hybrid at IFA, the challenge became clear -- there wasn't room in my life for two Galaxy gadgets, but a 21x zoom-equipped all-in-one sounded mighty promising. After I finally unpacked it, the 4.8-inch, touchscreen-equipped, 16.1-megapixel shooter didn't leave my side once during the next two weeks.
It streamed music in the gym, downloaded email on the go, and provided walking directions and historical context as I explored Thailand. But the Galaxy Camera's impressive zoom also brought me far closer to the action than even the most powerful camera phone, and a micro-SIM from iPhoneTrip enabled instant uploads to Dropbox and Instagram far from the nearest open hotspot. As you may have gathered from our review, the Galaxy Camera wasn't designed to replace anyone's smartphone, and with the jumbo footprint and mediocre battery upping the inconvenience factor, could such a device feasibly become your one and only? When the residents of Fort Morgan, Colorado take to the streets on the evening of December 3rd, they are sure to see some spectacular parade floats for the annual Christmas parade.? The biggest looks will likely be reserved for the float displaying a giant motorcycle constructed out of recycled and otherwise discarded materials.
The giant motorcycle, dubbed the ?Bronco Iron Horse?, is the brainchild of Clark Bettenhausen, a welder who has spent 25 years plying his trade in the metal business.? He specializes in creating motorcycle artwork out of recycled materials.? Sculpted in the Beauprez Repair Shop, situated near For Morgan, the larger than life bike is assembled from numerous items that would normally be found in a junk yard.? The fuel tank is constructed from two wheelbarrows, the headlights from a ball park and the engine sourced from 55 gallon drums and ammunition cases.? In all, the assembly has taken Bettenhausen approximately 700 hours to complete!? And he is proud of what he?s created, saying ?this is probably my best one.? This is really no small feat considering the rest of his motorcycle artworks are on display across the country.? ?God?s Ride? is on display in the desert at the Nevada-Oregon border, ?Lost in Nevada? on permanent display in
God's Ride
Winnemuca, Nevada where it was created for specifically for a bike show, and ?Angels Ride?, a much smaller motorcycle replication, on traveling display across the nation, at bars, churches etc.
Bettenhausen plans to drape ?Iron Horse??in Christmas lights and parade it down Main Street.? Afterwards, he hopes to connect with the Denver Broncos, and raffle the bike off to raise money for children?s charities.? However, currently, his focus remains on preparing the bike for its big Christmas parade debut.

Todd Bowles might not be able to fix the Eagles defense, but at least give him credit for accurately analyzing the situation.
The Eagles replacement coordinator described last night?s numerous coverage busts as ?a messed-up situation,? as succinct and accurate a description as possible.
Of course, that?s also another way of saying it?s the players? fault and not his own, but that?s beside the point.

In the five games since Bowles went from secondary coach to coordinator (after Juan Castillo was offered up), the results have been ridiculous.
The Eagles have allowed 75.2 percent completions, for 9.7 yards per attempt, with 13 touchdowns and no interceptions. Castillo?s defense led the league in opponents? completion percentage (52.3).
The entire Eagles organization has reached the ?what good?s it going to do? stage, and players said wholesale changes aren?t going to fix it.
?You stick with those people or those groups and you coach them harder,? cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha said. ?And those players obviously have to take it more ? I don?t want to say seriously because they?re taking it seriously ? but obviously have to be mentally focused a little bit more than they have been.

THE DEFENSE minister Ehud Barak?s resignation comes as reports swirled he would start a center-left party after the January elections. Instead, he has declared he?s quitting politics, effective upon the elections in the New Year.

But Barak told reporters that new faces in leadership roles would benefit Israel.

PHILADELPHIA Electronic circuits are typically integrated in rigid silicon wafers, but flexibility opens up a wide range of applications. In a world where electronics are becoming more pervasive, flexibility is a highly desirable trait, but finding materials with the right mix of performance and manufacturing cost remains a challenge.
Now a team of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania has shown that nanoscale particles, or nanocrystals, of the semiconductor cadmium selenide can be "printed" or "coated" on flexible plastics to form high-performance electronics.

"We have a performance benchmark in amorphous silicon, which is the material that runs the display in your laptop, among other devices," Kagan said. "Here, we show that these cadmium selenide nanocrystal devices can move electrons 22 times faster than in amorphous silicon."
Besides speed, another advantage cadmium selenide nanocrystals have over amorphous silicon is the temperature at which they are deposited. Whereas amorphous silicon uses a process that operates at several hundred degrees, cadmium selenide nanocrystals can be deposited at room temperature and annealed at mild temperatures, opening up the possibility of using more flexible plastic foundations.
Another innovation that allowed the researchers to use flexible plastic was their choice of ligands, the chemical chains that extend from the nanocrystals' surfaces and helps facilitate conductivity as they are packed together into a film.
"There have been a lot of electron transport studies on cadmium selenide, but until recently we haven't been able to get good performance out of them," Kim said. "The new aspect of our research was that we used ligands that we can translate very easily onto the flexible plastic; other ligands are so caustic that the plastic actually melts."
Because the nanocrystals are dispersed in an ink-like liquid, multiple types of deposition techniques can be used to make circuits. In their study, the researchers used spincoating, where centrifugal force pulls a thin layer of the solution over a surface, but the nanocrystals could be applied through dipping, spraying or ink-jet printing as well.
On a flexible plastic sheet a bottom layer of electrodes was patterned using a shadow mask essentially a stencil to mark off one level of the circuit. The researchers then used the stencil to define small regions of conducting gold to make the electrical connections to upper levels that would form the circuit. An insulating aluminum oxide layer was introduced and a 30-nanometer layer of nanocrystals was coated from solution. Finally, electrodes on the top level were deposited through shadow masks to ultimately form the circuits.
"The more complex circuits are like buildings with multiple floors," Kagan said. "The gold acts like staircases that the electrons can use to travel between those floors."
Using this process, the researchers built three kinds of circuits to test the nanocrystals performance for circuit applications: an inverter, an amplifier and a ring oscillator.
"An inverter is the fundamental building block for more complex circuits," Lai said. "We can also show amplifiers, which amplify the signal amplitude in analog circuits, and ring oscillators, where 'on' and 'off' signals are properly propagating over multiple stages in digital circuits."
"And all of these circuits operate with a couple of volts," Kagan said. "If you want electronics for portable devices that are going to work with batteries, they have to operate at low voltage or they won't be useful."
With the combination of flexibility, relatively simple fabrication processes and low power requirements, these cadmium selenide nanocrystal circuits could pave the way for new kinds of devices and pervasive sensors, which could have biomedical or security applications.
"This research also opens up the possibility of using other kinds of nanocrystals, as we've shown the materials aspect is not a limitation any more," Kim said.

PHILADELPHIA Electronic circuits are typically integrated in rigid silicon wafers, but flexibility opens up a wide range of applications. In a world where electronics are becoming more pervasive, flexibility is a highly desirable trait, but finding materials with the right mix of performance and manufacturing cost remains a challenge.
Now a team of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania has shown that nanoscale particles, or nanocrystals, of the semiconductor cadmium selenide can be "printed" or "coated" on flexible plastics to form high-performance electronics.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- Former championship boxer Hector ''Macho'' Camacho died Saturday at the hospital in Puerto Rico where he has been unconscious since he was shot in the face in an attack in his hometown.
Camacho went into cardiac arrest in the pre-dawn hours and he was then taken off life support and died shortly thereafter, said Dr. Ernesto Torres, the director of the Centro Medico trauma center in San Juan.
Camacho's mother, Maria Matias, said Friday night that she had supported removing him from life support after his three sons had arrived from the U.S. mainland and had a chance to see their father for the last time. They managed to visit him before he died, said former pro boxer Victor ''Luvi'' Callejas, a longtime friend.
''The family is destroyed,'' Callejas said outside the hospital.
Doctors had declared Camacho brain dead on Thursday. Matias had said she decided it was time for doctors to disconnect life support over the objections of the boxer's eldest son, Hector Jr., because there was no chance of recovery.
''I lost my son three days ago. He's alive only because of a machine,'' she said Friday night. ''My son is not alive. My son is only alive for the people who love him,'' she added.
Torres said that none of the boxer's organs could be donated because of the time between when he was declared brain dead and his death after going into cardiac arrest for the second time since the shooting.
Callejas lamented the inability to donate the organs. ''It's unfortunate that five more lives could not have been saved,'' he said. ''This could have been avoided.''
Camacho was shot as he sat in a car with a friend, 49-year-old Adrian Mojica Moreno, who was killed in the attack. Police spokesman Alex Diaz said officers found nine small bags of cocaine in the friend's pocket and a 10th bag open inside the car.
Police reported no arrests and said investigators continued to look for potential witnesses. Capt. Rafael Rosa told reporters they were following several leads, but declined to say whether police had identified any suspects. He said very few witnesses were cooperating.
Hector Camacho Jr. decried the violence that grips Puerto Rico, a U.S. island territory of nearly 4 million people that reported a record 1,117 homicides last year.
''Death, jail, drugs, killings,'' he said. ''That's what the streets are now.''
Camacho's sisters have said they would like to fly Camacho's body to New York and bury him there. Camacho grew up mostly in Harlem, earning the nickname the ''Harlem Heckler.''
He won super lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight world titles in the 1980s and fought high-profile bouts against Felix Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez and Sugar Ray Leonard while compiling a career record of 79-6-3. He knocked out Leonard in 1997, ending the former champ's final comeback attempt.
Camacho battled drug, alcohol and other problems throughout his life. He was sentenced in 2007 to seven years in prison on burglary charges, but a judge eventually suspended all but one year of the sentence and gave Camacho probation. He wound up serving two weeks in jail after violating that probation. A wife also filed domestic abuse complaints against him twice before their divorce.

She has a big future in television production, but she doesn?t know who Larry Hagman is, she has never watched an episode of Dallas in her life, and when you mention the phrase ?Who Shot JR?? to her, she tilts her head like a baffled golden retriever.
Thank God she met me, a grown man who longs for the day he meets Linda Gray, owns every season of the show up to and stopping with the dreaded ?Dream Season,? and keeps Dallas trading cards in his top drawer at work.
This was the biggest event in television history, and the audience it drew will never be duplicated. Yes, more people watched the final episode of MASH, but that was two-and-a-half hours, an episode five times its normal size. ?Who Shot JR? was its regular 44 minutes: four acts, no special guest stars, no weepy good-byes, no gallant speeches, no Korean babies parading around as chickens. The episode which aired on november 21, 1980 was just good, fun storytelling brought to a sleek well-honed climax. There was no intention to capture the fascination of the entire world. No calculation ahead of time. The producers, writers and actors simply knew what they were doing, and did it.
Somewhow, Julie being completely oblivous to the insane amount of global press that surrounded this event has brought back in full force all the memories of how much fun it was to be a part of. My entire family watched, everyone in my fifth grade class watched. I even remember having a tooth filled by Dr. Croal and him stopping mid-way through the procedure to ask ?So Gary, who do you think did it?? knowing he didn?t need to be more specific for me to understand what he was asking.
TV addiction will never be so much fun again. Now, we can each watch pretty much anything we want anytime we want. But I can still feel the labors of getting through the week leading up to that epsiode, hearing about it everywhere I went, the fun of getting a call from my sister-in-law?s family in Ohio, who got the show two hours earlier and refused to give up the identity of the culprit, and then? finally having my curiosity sated.
Watching the episode now, it comes off rather tame when compared to what television producers can get away with these days. The people who worked on Dallas had a much tighter box to work within, and pulled off far more fun than anything on the air now.
Julie, like everyone her age and younger, just plain missed out.
